By Product Change Notification (PCN), Intel informs about the upcoming setting of the CPU family Skylake-X. The former high-end desktop processors (HEDT) with up to 18 cores on the flagship Core i9-9980XE will no longer be available from Intel from the end of January 2021.

According to Intel, the Core 9000X and the workstation offshoot Xeon W-2000 can only be ordered from Intel until January 22, 2021, the last delivery date is July 9, 2021. The reason for the discontinuation of the Cpus is a simple generation change, because meanwhile the successors in the form of Cascade Lake-X (Core 10000X) are long in the trade.

Skylake-X marked by failed catch-up to AMD

A good three years ago, Intel launched the CPU family Skylake-X, which should stand up to the AMD Ryzen Threadripper. The debut with Core i7-7800X and Core i9-7900X initially disappointed with worse gaming performance than its predecessor. In the first duel with the Threadripper 1950X with 16 cores, Intel’s Core i9-7900X had to concede defeat with only ten cores. It was only with the 18-core flagship Core i9-7980XE that the achievement crown was regained, but at a high price of then unattainable 2,000 euros.

At the end of 2018, however, Intel swam the skins in the HEDT sector, because the Skylake-X Refresh, which again has a maximum of 18 cores with the Core i9-9980XE, had against AMD’s second Threadripper Generation with now up to 32 cores in applications and especially in the ratio of price and performance. Intel responded drastically by halving the price of Skylake-X.

HEDT: Intel remains at 18 cores, AMD offers up to 64

At a similar price level the successors of the series Cascade Lake-X (Core X 10000), which remain at 18 cores, while AMD is now even away with up to 64 cores with Threadripper 3000.
